The Story Behind

The Isetan Mitsukoshi Group's Christmas 2025 project is set in the fictional department store, "A Wondrous Winter Scene". The fantasy world in which a modern department store appears in the Edo period (1603 - 1867) is brought to life in the original creation of artist Muto Fumiaki.

The story unfolds in a subtly mysterious Japanese Christmas, where eras and cultures intertwine freely. Inspired by an old European legend that says the unseen becomes visible during the holidays, and by Edo-period culture that delighted in turning natural phenomena into spirited characters, the campaign imagines a fantastical world beyond reality — a dreamlike vision of what it might be like if a modern-day Isetan Mitsukoshi existed in the Edo period.

The department store has a seven-story structure, from the underground grocery store to the rooftop. The floor layout is easy for customers to imagine, and the unique world where Edo-period people are fused is depicted on a large scale, evoking a sense of exhilaration in the viewer.
